Giving Stuff Away

Giving Stuff Away

For decades you spent your time making money. Then in retirement you are spending money buying back time. You’ve worked hard. You’ve saved and invested. You got out of debt. Now you are rewarding yourself with retirement or semi-retirement. Is it hard for you now with fixed or limited income to be generous? Does worry, anxiety, a fluctuating economy, wars, or that credit card keep you from being generous?

Jesus commanded us, “Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure – pressed down, shaken together, and running over – will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38 CSB). Generosity will be rewarded by God in proportion to the measure you use. Do you use a thimble to measure what you give or dump truck? God will reward you accordingly.

Generosity is not only giving money, but giving yourself: your time, serving others, helping someone, or using your expertise to assist someone. It can be a simple, small act that has a big impact. How? Jesus says, “Whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42 CSB).

Jesus sees how you treat other Christ-followers. How do you treat the heavenly Father’s children? Are you generous toward Christ’s disciples in forgiveness, kindness, and goodness? Being generous includes but goes way beyond just giving tithes and offerings.

But there’s something you can give away that the more you give it, the more you will have of it! If you are a follower of Jesus as Lord of your life, then He gives you a boatload of stuff you can give away in unlimited supply. What is that? As the Spirit of Christ fills you He gives you, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). Start thinking in terms of giving this fruit away with an endless supply!
