The clear glass jug with a narrow opening contains a small orange. The neck of the jug has a sturdy cord tied to it with other end tied to a tree. A monkey approaches. He examines the orange in the jug. He puts his hand into the jug and grabs the orange. But now he is unable to pull the orange out with his fist around the orange.
The man who set the trap approaches. The monkey frantically tries to run away but refuses to let go of the orange. All that the monkey must do is release his grip on the orange and he will be free. The monkey runs, jumps, flips, and screams, but the man approaches and easily captures the monkey.
Satan’s vile motive is to trap you. He has set a beautiful trap hard to resist. “For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of one’s possessions – is not from the Father, but is from the world” (1 John 2:16 CSB). We stick our hand into the jar of this world and grab tightly. There is no escape, unless you let go of it.
Jesus has the solution. “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me, and the gospel will save it” (Mark 8:35 CSB). You must let go of the orange to be free. Is there something more important than the orange? Yes, your life! Jesus offers abundant, fulfilled life here and now, as well as eternal life, if you will let go and give your life to Him and the gospel.
What is the gospel? It is Jesus dying for you and rising from the dead so you could be saved. Call on the Name of the Lord Jesus and you will be saved. It is the good news that you can let go of that which enslaves you, and receive life.
What is the orange you are refusing to release? Tired of wrestling with that jug and rope? Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 CSB).
