A New Schedule begins July 7 at Balboa Baptist

Exciting and challenging describe what’s happening at Balboa Baptist Church. Since Covid the Balboa congregation has grown from 600 to 800 members. Worship attendance increased from 309 to 520. Bible Class participation grew from 291 to 445.

Years ago a wise man told me that pastoring a church is like turning an aircraft carrier around, it takes a lot of time and space. Shifting hundreds of people from a schedule that’s worked for years to a new schedule is much the same. We have been talking about and planning for it for eighteen months.

Our Minister of Music for Traditional Worship, Keith Stevens, said it best, “Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.” Funny, but true! So we are asking folks to be flexible, positive, and have a sense of humor.

Why the new schedule? Another statistic I personally have never seen is that 92% of Balboa worshippers attend one of the 23 Bible Classes that meet every Sunday. The growth in the number of Bible Classes and in Bible Class attendance now requires us to use each classroom twice. So that requires a new, but simple schedule.

The new schedule on Sunday mornings will be 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. At 9:00 a.m. Traditional Worshippers will meet in the Sanctuary and then go to Bible Classes at 10:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. Contemporary Worshippers will meet in the Outreach Center but attend Bible Classes earlier at 9:00 a.m. We call it the Double-Double schedule and July 7th has been proclaimed 3D Day or Double-Double Day.

The early church developed an ebb and flow of large groups meeting for worship and teaching, and small groups meeting for Bible discussion, fellowship, and outreach. The apostle Paul said, “You know that I did not hesitate to proclaim anything to you that was profitable and to teach you publicly and from house to house” (Acts 20:20).

Some refer to this verse in Acts 20:20 as the 20-20 Vision. Its simple. It works. An altering between large groups and small groups is an efficient way to meet many of the needs of God’s people to grow as disciples of Christ.

You are invited. Our schedule this Sunday is 8:45am Traditional Worship, 11:00am Contemporary Worship, and 10:00 a.m. Bible Classes. Go online at Balboa.Live to watch livestream or recorded. www.BalboaBaptist.Church
