Who We Are
Dr. Wright became our pastor in August 2014. His 44 years in ministry began at age 16. He served two churches as pastor and two churches as children and youth minister. He earned degrees from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia AR, Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth TX, and Midwestern Seminary in Kansas City MO. Most recently Dr. Wright served the 1,400 churches of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention preaching, teaching, and consulting in over half of those churches over 16 years. He believes “Jesus is in the life-changing business” and his job is to feed, lead, and care. He likes to play with his four grandkids, play some golf, canoe, camp, hunt and fish.
Rev. Steve Butler
Steve and his wife Barbara were called to Balboa in April 2006 from their ministry as Senior Pastor and wife of First Baptist Church, Joplin, Missouri. They have previously served as Pastor and wife of churches in Arkansas, Texas and Cambridgeshire, England. His ministry includes assisting the pastor in pastoral care and Bible teaching, direction of the educational ministry of the church, financial administration and supervision of most of the church support staff.
Steve is a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas, where he met Barbara, who is an elementary teacher, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the proud father of Lori, who is married to Kenny Johnson, and Brian, who is married to Pasley, and the proud grandfather of Isabel and Parker. Steve is passionate about ministering to people, teaching and preaching the word of God, and helping people come to Christ. He is an avid reader and loves hiking.
Rev. Jim Raney
Minister of Music
Jim and wife, Pam started their music ministry at Balboa Baptist in October 2006. They have two grown children: Adrian and family of Del Rio TX and Lauren and family of Covington TN. They have 5 grandchildren. Jim and Pam were both raised in Sharon TN. Jim received his B.S. in Business Administration at University of TN at Martin, and Masters of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX. He was ordained to the Gospel Ministry in 1981. The Raneys have ministered full-time in Baptist churches where Jim served in various capacities as minister of music, education, youth, senior adults, and media in the states of Kentucky, Missouri (20 years), Mississippi, and now at Balboa Baptist since 2006. Jim and Pam both love serving the Lord through the local church and leading people in worship.
Debbie Lindgren Shannon
Debbie is blessed to have been with Balboa Baptist since February 1999. She spent seven years working in the legal/compliance department of a reputable insurance company on Michigan Avenue, Chicago before being drawn to Arkansas by her brother, David, whose job brought him to Hot Springs. Debbie vacationed in the Village often with her three sons, and her parents moved to HSV in 1996. Her sister, Donna, and family also live in HSV, and another brother, Donald, lives in Abilene, TX, so she is blessed to be near family. Debbie married her best friend, Brian Shannon on August 28, 2015. Debbie is excited to see how God has and continues to work through Balboa Baptist Church.
Part-time Secretary (office guy)
Tom joined the staff in 2015. He, his wife Linda and son Chris moved to Hot Springs Village from the Washington DC area in 2000. Before “retirement”, Tom had been a systems engineer with the Federal Aviation Administration. Since moving to the Village, he has occupied his time with work in various activities, including administrative functions in other Hot Springs Village churches, Real Estate agent, the national Census of 2010, and sales associate at Sears. Linda’s parents, sister and brother-in-law are also Balboa Baptist Church members.
Part-time Financial Officer
Dave and his wife Anna moved to the Village in October 2004, after living in California for 28 years. They knew the Village very well, since Dave's parents moved here in 1978. The Village has always been a place to visit, and now the best place to live. They have two sons that live in Hot Springs. They joined Balboa Baptist in November 2010, and Dave became the Financial Secretary in August 2014.
Dave has served prior churches in a variety of financial positions, including financial secretary, bookkeeper, treasurer, chief financial officer and stewardship deacon.
Pam Raney has served as church pianist or organist since she was a teenager, and has served at Balboa Baptist Church since 2006. She taught private piano lessons for about 25 years, and served as church music secretary for 14 years, working alongside her husband, Jim. Pam has taught children’s choirs, and children, youth, and young married Sunday School classes, and enjoys teaching in VBS each summer. Pam and Jim have a son, Adrian, and daughter, Lauren, who have blessed them with five grandchildren.
Cyndi and her husband Dennis came to Hot Springs Village and joined Balboa Baptist Church in March 2012. Cyndi joined our church staff as church organist January 2, 2013 after our organist of 14 years, Mary Ann Rishel, retired. Cyndi began her church music ministry as organist at the age of 14 in Bossier City, Louisiana. She has served churches in South Carolina and Ohio as well. She enjoys playing the organ and states, "My goal is to provide music that glorifies the Lord and enhances worship." Cyndi and Dennis are enjoying their retirement in the Village and frequently walk the trails or go to the fitness center. Cyndi also enjoys playing Bridge with the Balboa Bridge Belles.
Children's Ministry Director
Judy has been the Children's Ministry Director since October 2016. She has been a Life Skills Teacher for Middle/High School students with learning challenges at Jessieville since August of 2013. She taught at Cutter Morning Star for one year prior to that. She moved back to Arkansas from Fort Worth in June of 2012 where she was an Assistant Administrator at Harvest Christian School for 15 years. She has one son, Jacob, and Daughter-in-love, Haley who live in Burleson, Texas. She has 30 years of experience in education and loves working with kids.
Eloise has been a childcare worker at Balboa since August 2004. She retired from Hot Springs Village Police Department in December 2012, having spent 11 years of a 52+ year career there. She still works two part-time jobs, but her favorite, of course, is in the Nursery at Balboa.
Eloise has 3 children (2 daughters and a son), 2 granddaughters and 5 great-grandchildren. She loves to travel and spend time with her family as time permits. As she says, "I cherish my BBC home and am so blessed and thankful for the spiritual guidance I receive, and the caring people I have the privilege to know and associate with".
Jerry has been with Balboa Baptist as custodian since 2011. A native Arkansan from Camden, he retired from International Paper Company after 40 years as a maintenance supervisor. Jerry enjoys golf and spending time with his grandson, Bryan, and supporting him in various sports.
